Behold, The New Apartment

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a love / hate relationship with moving.  Like, I love living in my new places and trying new parts of various cities but I hate packing and the physical act of moving.

So I've decided to move yet again.  In a week.  Two days before I leave to go home for my sister's wedding.  During the busiest work week for the year.  Sheesh.

If you're friends with me on Facebook, you've probably read my rants about my loud neighbors and the weird bugs I get in my current apartment and all of that.  I've done the pretty big, really old house with lots of character that costs a fortune to heat and cool for the last year so I'm changing to the opposite end of the spectrum.

I'm renting a studio in a high rise apartment building right down town.  In a building with an indoor pool and hot tub, one block from where I hang out ALL THE TIME and only 5 blocks from work.  Above the library.  (Which of course means more book reviews coming soon!)

Yes, downsizing is a little scary.  But I'll be saving money, will be in the heart of downtown, and have a killer view out my window.  You'll have to wait to see pictures until I'm all moved in an settled (exciting things coming your way, trust me!) but in the meantime, I need a little advice on this whole downsizing thing.

If you want to help with some furniture arrangement / give me some input on my ideas, feel free to click the link below.  If you'd rather be surprised, then don't.  Up to you!  (But really, I could use the help.)

I'm the master of space planning and have always created my apartment out of graph paper and created my furniture out of little paper cutouts and rearranged to my heart's content before moving in to a place.  You should have seen the diagrams my family was provided when I moved into my Nashville apartment.  So doing this for a studio apartment is proving to be extra fun.  This time, though, I went "high tech" and created my apartment in Microsoft Word so you can join in the fun.

Here are my top three layouts (thus far - these have already changed multiple times today).
Bookshelves would be in the hallway

Now it's your turn.  What do you think?  Any input on these?

Think you can do better?  Click this link to access the Microsoft Word version of my new apartment and arrange the furniture yourself.  Send any awesome designs to my email address - r.starich@gmail.com - so I can see them for myself!

Happy Apartment Arranging!

  1. oOoOo. I like number 2! do you have a kitchen space in this location? (I'm assuming it's a kithette type thing over by the bar stools).

I'm right with you on moving. I hate doing it, but once it's done I always feel so much better. And it sounds like your location is FANTASTIC. can't wait to see real-deal pictures.

    1. Yes, this is only the living space layout - there is also a decent sized kitchen (I've had smaller in much larger apartments!), a walk-in closet, and a bathroom - plus a long hallway, wide enough to put my bookshelves in!

I am seriously excited to be moving in.

  2. Oh! I thought it looked awfully cramped. I didn't even realize the bathroom was missing. :) None of these are great for watching TV but number 3 seems best if you mostly watch from the "living room" (as opposed to the "bedroom".) Personally, I wouldn't want the bed facing the couch. I think that would make the apartment feel smaller. Therefore I like number 3 best. The biggest problem I see is access to the bookcase behind the chaise. - Rusty
